Dubai Municipality deploys smart robot for faster, safer 3D surveys

Advanced technology captures detailed spatial data with minimal human intervention

DUBAI – The Dubai Municipality has deployed a smart robot for geospatial surveying, bringing LiDAR, smart cameras and advanced data technologies into field operations across Dubai.

The system is designed to collect highly accurate spatial information with limited human intervention, while operating continuously across different conditions.

Its capabilities are being used to strengthen the digital data supporting infrastructure development, asset management, urban planning and government decision-making.

Smart surveying

The robot combines geospatial data collection with panoramic imagery, video, 3D coordinates, point clouds and three-dimensional models. This creates a detailed digital representation of surveyed assets and enables updates to spatial databases, while expanding surveying outputs beyond conventional two-dimensional data.

At the Wadi Al Amardi Housing Project for UAE nationals, the technology was used to conduct final surveys of completed buildings and support the issuance of final survey certificates. The deployment reduced cumulative customer waiting time by 472 days and cut operating costs by 90 per cent.

The technology also generated savings equivalent to 24 days of fieldwork and 40 hours of office work at the project.

Maitha Al Nuaimi, Director of the GIS Centre Department at Dubai Municipality, said the robot is among the smart solutions being deployed to improve the efficiency and accuracy of spatial data collection. She said it strengthens the readiness of geospatial information and supports government services through reliable and up-to-date data.

Wider rollout

Saeed Al Falasi, Director of the Survey Department at Dubai Municipality, said smart geospatial surveying technologies are part of efforts to modernise field operations, accelerate data collection and improve spatial database updates.

The Municipality plans to expand the technology across residential community projects in Dubai and further integrate it into field surveying operations.

The robot can also improve occupational safety by reducing the need for personnel to enter difficult-to-access locations, while increasing surveying productivity and data quality. Its 3D datasets provide broader coverage of building façades and create detailed information for engineering, planning and other geospatial applications.
